House & Senate Pass FY 2023 Omnibus Bill ... with More Funding for 1890 HBCUs
This week, both the U.S. House and Senate passed a $1.7 trillion spending package for Fiscal Year 2023. Known as the “Omnibus Spending Bill,” the legislation goes to President Biden’s desk for final signature and it will fund the federal government between now and September 30, 2023.
What does this mean for the 1890 Land Grant HBCUs? It includes an overall $17.5 million increase year-over-year.
Several members of Congress, including Reps. David Scott (GA), Sanford Bishop (GA), Alma Adams (NC) and Senators Sherrod Brown (OH) and Raphael Warnock (GA) and others, were key to this effort. Below is a breakdown - courtesy of Federal Street Strategies - of the proposed amounts of funding for key 1890 agriculture programs for FY 2023 that were released earlier this week.
